Non-residential permits down, but residential permits up

WINNIPEG — Manitoba was one of six provinces to see a drop-off in construction intentions in July, according to new building permit data released today.

Statistics Canada said Manitoba municipalities issued $126.6 million worth of residential and non-residential permits during the month. That was a decline of 8.6 per cent from June’s total of $122.4 million.

All of the decline was on the non-residential side of the construction industry, where permit values fell by 27.4 per cent to $56.9 million from $78.4 million in June. The value of residential permits issued increased by 3.5 per cent to $126.6 million from $122.4 million.

Despite July’s overall decline, building permit values were still running 34.2 per cent ahead of last year’s pace after the first seven months of the year — $1.37 billion versus $1.02 billion, Statistics Canada said.

Nationally, the value of permits issued across the country fell by 2.3 per cent to $6.8 billion in July. Statistics Canada said the main reason for the decline was lower construction intentions for both residential and non-residential buildings.
