Manitoba matched the country’s performance with the second monthly increase in manufacturing shipments over the last five months.
According to Statistics Canada, Manitoba manufacturers shipped $1.31 billion in goods in May, up 1.7 per cent from April and up 1.5 per cent year over years.
Across the country, shipments were up 0.7 per cent to $48.6 billion, led by the chemical industry where monthly sales were up for the eighth time in the last 12 months.
Nationally, sales of primary metals rose 4.0 per cent in May to $3.5 billion, partially rebounding from a 9.1 per cent drop in April.
The 1.7 per cent increase in seasonally adjusted numbers for Manitoba in May came after declines in March and April and an increase in February.
Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario were the only provinces with stronger performances than Manitoba in May.
Nationally, year over year results are down 3.2 per cent.
In Saskatchewan, year over year manufacturing shipments are up 16.7 per cent.
