Richardson International signs grain-handling pact with CWB

WINNIPEG — Richardson International Ltd. is the latest major grain company to sign a grain-handling agreement with the Canadian Wheat Board.

The Winnipeg-based firm, which is Canada’s largest privately owned agribusiness, said the agreement takes effect today — the first day under the new open marketing system for Canadian wheat, durum and barley.

With the legislated end to the CWB’s 75-year monopoly over the sale of Canadian-grown wheat, durum and barley, farmers can now sell their grain to whomever they want.

That includes the CWB, which now has to compete with grain companies and other buyers for farmers’ grain. But because the board doesn’t own any grain elevators or port facilities, it needs to negotiate grain-handling agreements with the grain companies so its customers can deliver their grain to their elevators.

Richardson said CWB customers will now be able to deliver their grain to any of its elevators, including all of its Pioneer Grain facilities in Western Canada, its Tri Lake Agri facility in Killarney, Man., and its Westmor Terminals in Morinville, Alta.

In addition to Richardson, the CWB also has grain-agreements with Cargill, Vitera, Louis Dreyfus Canada and several small, independent elevator operators.
