Former online pharmacy entrepreneur detained in Miami

Andrew Strempler, a former Manitoba online pharmacy magnate, has been detained after a court hearing in Miami.
Alicia Valle, Special Counsel to the U.S. Attorney, said that the court ordered Strempler to be detained before his trial "based on risk of flight." Strempler was arrested in Miami last week at an airport, as he headed from South America to Canada.
Strempler had received attention as one of the province’s most well-known young businessmen, as he built the online pharmacy business RxNorth.com from Minnedosa. However, Strempler struggled in later years after he sold the business in 2006.
By 2009, Strempler was at a disciplinary hearing at the Manitoba Pharmaceutical Association, and had to strike his name from a pharmacy registry and pay $7,500 to stay charges against him.
The ruling to detain Strempler was made at a pretrial detention hearing Wednesday.
The next court date is set for June 29.
