MANITOBA farmers seeded more potatoes this year than in 2011, according to preliminary data released Friday.
Statistics Canada said local farmers seeded 76,000 acres of potatoes this spring -- an increase of 4.1 per cent from 2011's total of 73,000 acres.
That left it tied with Prince Edward Island for the largest percentage increase in seeded acres this year, although P.E.I. is still the country's leading potato-growing province with 89,500 acres.
Statistics Canada said this year's expansion in Manitoba was primarily due to increased contract volumes for processing potatoes, which are used to make things such as french fries.
