Bioniche Q2 net loss increases to $4.3M as revenue falls almost $3M

BELLEVILLE, Ont. - Bioniche Life Sciences Inc. (TSX:BNC) has reported a big increase in its fiscal 2012 second-quarter net loss amid sharply reduced revenues for the period.

The Ontario-based developer and manufacturer of products for both the human and animal health markets worldwide said it lost $4.3 million or four cents per diluted share in the three months ended Dec. 31.

That compared with a net loss of $2.6 million or three cents per diluted share in the same 2010 period.

Revenue for the three months ended Dec. 31. was $8.1 million down from $11 million in the prior-year quarter when the company reported $4 million in non-recurring licensing fees.

Sales revenue in the most recent period was $7.4 million, up from $6.1 million the previous year, while revenue from research collaborations was down slightly at $767,000 from $854,000.

"We are pleased to see the increase in sales revenues related to our animal health products in the second quarter as compared to the same period last year, as well as on a year-to-date basis," said Graeme McRae, chairman, president and chief executive.

"This reflects double-digit increases in sales of key products in Australia and South America and stabilizing sales in North America and Europe, notwithstanding a stronger Canadian dollar," McRae said, adding that the company's reproductive franchise continues to be an important part of its business focus.
