Biotech awards showcase Manitoba's top innovators
"ö Life Science Company of the Year -- Biovail Corporation, Canada's largest publicly traded pharmaceutical company, whose primary manufacturing facility is in Steinbach, has been engaged in the formulation, clinical testing, registration, manufacture and commercialization of pharmaceutical products.
"ö Early Stage Life Science Company of the Year -- Kane Biotech Inc., is one of the few companies in the world focuses on developing products that prevent and remove microbial biofilms, which have recently begun to receive widespread notoriety for being a major cause of human health complications.
"ö Outstanding Leadership in Health Research -- Dr. Grant Pierce, in collaboration with the faculties of pharmacy, agricultural and food sciences, human ecology and medicine at the University of Manitoba. He has initiated the Canadian Centre for Agri-food Research in Health and Medicine at the St. Boniface General Hospital Research Centre to investigate the health-related benefits of nutraceuticals and functional foods.
"ö Industry Leadership Award -- Stephanie Haverstick. With more than 18 years experience in the pharmaceutical industry, Haverstick has participated on several industry boards, including the Natural Health Products Manufacturers of Canada and the Health Care Products Association of Manitoba. She has also played a large role in the early stages of Life Science Association of Manitoba and was an instrumental part of the group's early growth.
"ö Ag Bio/Industrial Biotech Award for Innovation -- BrettYoung Seeds. A long-standing Manitoba company, BrettYoung Seeds has developed BioBoost, a plant-growth promoting rhizobacteria, a bacteria from the root region that colonizes plant roots and stimulates plant growth. BioBoost is a unique biological growth promoter for canola that enhances performance and production.
"ö Most Promising Life Science Student -- Meghan Azad is a full-time PhD student at the University of Manitoba, studying in the department of biochemistry and medical genetics. She has received numerous academic awards throughout her studies and has maintained an impressive grade-point average.
