Sears to begin charging for plastic bags

WINNIPEG - Sears is joining the the many other Manitoba stores that are charging for plastic bags.

Customers will be charged five cents for a bag at the Winnipeg Sears stores, the company said in a news release on Monday.

The net proceeds from the sale of plastic bags will be donated to environmental and children’s cancer charities, said the company.

At least the proceeds are going to a charity, unlike the grocery stores. At 5 cents per bag it will turn into quite a big revenue stream for Superstore and the like.

Good for Sears! I still won't shop there since it's money out of our economy to the US parent company, but nonetheless they're being a good role model in that regard.

@staffwriter - proofread your story before placing it on the website, your penmanship is atrocious.

Let's hope that Sears employees ask whether customer's want a bag or not and not asssume otherwise.
I like the option of bringing in my own re-usable cloth bag and I'd dislike being charged for something I didn't need.
