United buys 150 Boeings

UNITED Airlines ordered 150 Boeing 737s on Thursday, a big win for the jet-maker and a clear sign the world's largest airline is shifting increasingly toward Boeing planes.

United ordered 50 Boeing 737-900ERs, which begin arriving late next year. It's also buying 100 new 737 Max 9s, a revamped 737 that is getting new engines and other tweaks to make it more fuel- efficient. They start arriving at United in 2018.

Philippines outlook good

MANILA, Philippines -- The Philippines has a good chance of winning an investment-grade rating in 2013 for the first time as it sustains faster growth and cuts debt levels, Budget Secretary Butch Abad says.

Barclays predicts the country's score will be elevated from so-called junk status in 12 to 18 months.

GM's Euro CEO resigns

FRANKFURT, Germany -- The CEO of General Motors' loss-making European business abruptly stepped down Thursday, a sign the automaker's top management wants to speed up what has been a slow-moving restructuring plan.

Karl-Friedrich Stracke stepped down just two weeks after presenting a new plan to rebuild the struggling European Opel and Vauxhall brands and return them to profitability.

Lawsuits net US$571M

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Three Asia-based companies have agreed to pay $571 million to settle claims by officials in eight states that they conspired to inflate prices for liquid-crystal display screens used in televisions and computer monitors, according to New York's attorney general.

Corus shares drop

TORONTO -- Corus Entertainment Inc. shares dropped sharply Thursday after third-quarter revenue came in below market expectations.

Shares in the television, radio and animation company gave up $1.15, about five per cent, to close at $22.25 Thursday.
