Planting seeds of knowledge
A new website has been launched to help Canadian and U.S. wheat and barley producers find their way in the new open-market environment that begins Wednesday.
The website (http://canada-usgrainandseedtrade.info) was launched Monday by a working group of Canadian and U.S. non-profit and trade organizations.
The groups said the legislated end to the Canadian Wheat Board's long-standing monopoly over the sales of Canadian-grown wheat, durum and barley creates opportunities for Canadian and U.S. producers to move grain across the border in both directions. And that has farmers on both sides of the border asking a lot of questions about how the new system will work.
"The site will help producers better understand how to navigate through these changes and market their grain across the border," said Richard Phillips, executive director of the Grain Growers of Canada.
Tough time for job hunters
IT'S going to be more difficult for local job seekers to find work over the next few months, according to the latest help-wanted survey by the Conference Board of Canada.
The Ottawa-based think-tank said Monday Winnipeg is one of 15 census metropolitan areas (CMAs) where the labour market is expected to remain soft for the near term.
It said its most recent survey of 79 online job boards in Canada showed only five CMAs have positive near-term job prospects.
Surprisingly, not one of them is in western Canada.
"But given that the economic outlook for the West remains bright, this is more likely to be a temporary pause than the beginning of any downward trend," the board said.
Arctic Glacier takeover done
ARCTIC Glacier Income Fund's new lease on life has officially begun.
H.I.G. Capital has completed its $434.5-million acquisition of the financially troubled Winnipeg packaged-ice manufacturer.
The Miami-based private equity investment firm also reiterated Arctic Glacier Holdings, Inc., as the company is now called, will remain headquartered in Winnipeg.
"We are very excited about the Arctic Glacier opportunity," said Bret Wiener, a managing director of H.I.G Capital.
"The company is a market leader with a diversified customer base, broad geographic footprint and high-quality production and distribution assets. We see tremendous opportunities in the business and look forward to supporting Keith (president and CEO Keith McMahon) and the Arctic team."
