Pattison purchases OK'd

THE CRTC has approved the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group's acquisition of three radio stations -- two in Winnipeg and one in Calgary -- from Bell Media.

The B.C.-based company is buying FAB 94.3 (CHIQ-FM) in Winnipeg, a classic pop station primarily featuring hits from the 1960s and '70s, and QX104, also of Winnipeg. The other station is Kool FM 101.5 CKCE in Calgary.

The company said it is an important acquisition for Pattison since it expands its radio presence in Alberta as they also prepare to launch a new Calgary station, CHPK-FM The Peak in 2014.

This is the first foray into the Winnipeg radio market for Pattison.

It grows the company's radio footprint to 33 FM radio stations in Western Canada, along with three conventional television stations.

Hyundai, Kia to reimburse

HYUNDAI and its sister company Kia said Monday they will pay up to $395 million to consumers as part of a proposed settlement over overstated gas mileage.

The Environmental Protection Agency found inflated numbers on 13 Hyundai and Kia vehicles in November 2012.

Hyundai and Kia acknowledged the problem, changed the fuel economy numbers and blamed a procedural error. Since then, Hyundai and Kia have been compensating owners with payments of around $88 annually, which is based on the amount the mileage was overstated and the average price of gasoline.

Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors are also offering an option of a lump-sum payment. The companies put a figure to it Monday, saying Hyundai would pay up to $210 million and Kia up to $185 million. The total value depends on how many consumers opt for the one-time payment instead of the annual reimbursement. The companies say the lump-sum payment amount varies but would average $353 per Hyundai owner and lessee and $667 for Kia.
