Centrepoint condo tower added to plan

A highrise condominium tower has been added to the Centrepoint redevelopment project at 311 Portage Ave. in downtown Winnipeg.

A spokesman for Centrepoint's developers -- Longboat Development Corp. and Artis Real Estate Investment Trust -- said a letter of intent has been signed with a Toronto developer to build a condo tower on top of the south end of the development's 450-stall parkade.

Longboat president Scott Stephanson said the height and cost of the new building have yet to be determined. The tower will have up to 140 units, he said, and they'll likely be under 1,000 square feet to keep them more affordable.

Stephanson wouldn't identify the Toronto developer, saying that information will be released within two to three weeks.

"But they're an established development group... with several highrise buildings and a lot of experience in the condo market," he said. "So we're really excited."

The $75-million Centrepoint development, already under construction, will take up much of the block between Portage and Ellice avenues and Donald and Hargrave streets. There will also be another highrise tower on the southeast corner that will include one floor of retail space, four floors of office space, and a 15-storey, 154-room Alt hotel.

Site drawings also show a second residential building atop the north end of the parkade. But Longboat officials have not said publicly a second building is being contemplated.
