Condos planned for site of Monty's on Pembina

THERE may be a few tears in their beers when current and former patrons of the Montcalm Hotel/Monty's nightclub find out what's in store for the Pembina Highway watering hole.

While the rising cost of new construction is prompting more property owners to find new uses for their buildings rather than tear them down and build something new, it looks as if the Montcalm may not be so lucky.

The city has been asked to approve a plan to demolish the hotel, which used to be a favorite haunt of University of Manitoba students, to make way for a new condominium complex.

Preliminary plans filed with the city by Pre-Con Builders on behalf of the building's owner -- a numbered Manitoba company -- say the intention is to build a four-storey, 84-unit complex with 43 parking stalls on the ground floor under the building and another 25 stalls along the front property line.

The city's urban planning division, which has approved the proposal, said "some interesting features have been included in the design... including orange balconies placed at various locations, and an interesting and unique exterior material comprised of 'pre-finished steel diamond shingle' of varying colours."

The matter is to go before the city's board of adjustment on Wednesday.
