Poll shows many Canadians leaving RRSP contributions to the last minute

  • Print

TORONTO - A new CIBC (TSX:CM) poll suggests almost one-third, or 31 per cent, of eligible Canadians were waiting until the last minute to make RRSP contributions for the 2013 tax year.

The poll was conducted by Harris/Decima two weeks before the March 3 deadline.

It indicates those most likely to wait until deadline time to make a planned RRSP contribution were people between the ages of 25 and 44.

It suggests 22 per cent of Canadians in this age group had yet to make contributions with just two weeks left to do so.

Canadians closer to retirement fared slightly better — nine per cent of those aged 45-to-64 still hadn't made a planned contribution at the time the survey was taken.

Past CIBC research has shown that younger Canadians are often faced with trying to balance debt repayment with savings, which may contribute to delaying their RRSP contributions.
