Funeral home seeks strip-mall site near eatery
City council's appeals committee is bracing to hear arguments in favour of a funeral home that wants to set up in the same Logan Avenue strip mall as a restaurant.
In July, the city's board of adjustment rejected Mike Knysh's application to grant a conditional use for a funeral home at 1111 Logan Ave., a strip mall at the intersection with McPhillips Street. A Chinese buffet restaurant occupies about half the leasable space in the mall.
"A funeral home is a necessary community service, which every one of us will someday need," Knysh wrote in an appeal letter that also expressed concern a member of the board of adjustment made reference to "cultural issues" pertaining to his application.
His appeal will be heard by Couns. Paula Havixbeck, Ross Eadie, Harvey Smith and Thomas Steen at a public hearing on Thursday.
