Further round of layoffs at Convergys
A spokeswoman at the industry giant's Cincinnati head office said the recent completion of a temporary project -- which ran two and a half months longer than anticipated -- has affected 21 positions.
Amy Williams said the company was able to find other work for some of the employees.
She also said about 23 positions were also found for 65 others who were laid off in September due to a change in a client's business needs.
The company now has a Winnipeg workforce of about 580, a far cry from the 1,700 it had at the beginning of 2008.
The stronger Canadian dollar, increases in overseas outsourcing and the recent global recession have reduced the number of people working in customer contact centres in Manitoba from about 12,000 more than a decade ago to much less than 10,000 today.
