How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major averages fared Thursday

The stock market ended mostly lower Thursday as investors assessed the latest round of company earnings and sold utility and energy stocks. Tesla Motors fell 11 per cent after the electric car maker reported a $49.8 million loss. Most indexes gave up early gains and ended the day lower.

On Thursday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 32.43 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 16,550.97

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 2.58 points, or 0.1 per cent, to 1,875.63.

The Nasdaq composite dropped 16.18 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 4,051.50.

For the week:

The Dow is up 38.08 points, or 0.2 per cent.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index is down 5.51 points, or 0.3 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 72.40 points, or 1.8 per cent.

For the year:

The Dow is down 25.69 points, or 0.2 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 27.27 points, or 1.5 per cent.

The Nasdaq is down 125.09 points, or 3 per cent
