How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

The Standard & Poor's 500 index closed above 2,000 points for the first time Tuesday. Financial markets moved higher after some encouraging news, including a surge in consumer confidence. The Dow Jones industrial average is about 32 points below the record close it set on July 16, while the Nasdaq remains well below its dot-com era high of 5,048.62 set in March 2000.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average rose 29.83 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 17,106.70.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 2.10 points, or 0.1 per cent, to close at 2,000.02.

The Nasdaq composite rose 13.29 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 4,570.64.

For the week:

The Dow is up 105.48 points, or 0.6 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 11.62 points, or 0.6 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 32.09 points, or 0.7 per cent

For the year:

The Dow is up 530.04 points, or 3.2 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 151.66 points, or 8.2 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 394.05 points, or 9.4 per cent.
