How the Dow Jones industrial average and other major indexes fared on Tuesday

Concerns over weaker global economic growth appeared to outweigh a pair of strong reports on the U.S. economy Tuesday, nudging stocks to a tiny loss. Crude oil prices sank 3 per cent, pulling Exxon Mobil, Chevron and stocks of other oil producers down.

On Tuesday:

The Dow Jones industrial average fell 30.89 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 17,067.56.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index slipped 1.09 point, less than 0.1 per cent, to 2,002.28.

The Nasdaq composite added 17.92 points, or 0.4 per cent, to 4,598.19.

For the year:

The Dow is up 490.90 points, or 3 per cent.

The S&P 500 index is up 153.92 points, or 8.3 per cent.

The Nasdaq is up 421.60 points, or 10.1 per cent.
