Dr. Patricia Martens

has been selected to join the Order of Canada. Dr. Martens is a professor in the faculty of medicine's department of community health sciences at the University of Manitoba, and also the director of the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy, an internationally acclaimed university-based research centre focusing on population-based health services, public health and population-health research. This is the third time a director of the MCHP has been awarded an Order of Canada.

Steven Raber

a partner with Fillmore Riley LLP, was elected to the board of directors of the Sharon Home Fund Inc., which raises funds for the not-for-profit personal-care home operated by the Sharon Home Inc. under the name Saul and Claribel Simkin Centre. Raber continues in his role as a member of the fiscal advisory committees of both the Sharon Home Inc. and the Sharon Home Fund Inc.

has announced the following award winners: Jo-Anne Gibson, Acadia Junior High, Pembina Trails School Division was the recipient of the Canadian Library Association's Angela Thacker-Memorial Award. Zoya Osipova, teacher-librarian, Dakota Collegiate, Louis Riel School Division received the MSLA Outstanding Teacher-Librarian of the Year Award. Gordon Crook, principal, Tec Voc High School, Winnipeg School Division received the MSLA School Administrator Award for Distinguished Service. Nell Ududec, library consultant, Pembina Trails School Division received the MSLA Distinguished Service Award.

The Friends of the Winnipeg Public Library

are proud to announce that Susan Fraser, past president, was awarded the 2013 Manitoba Library Service Award in the volunteer category. Also the Friends have been named a co-recipient of the 2012 Gabriele Schreiber (Random House of Canada) Friends of the Year Award which is given to a Friends of the Library group for outstanding support to its library and for outstanding volunteer involvement.

Orysia Tracz

writer, translator, speaker and consultant, was the 2013 recipient of the Osvita Foundation Award at the testimonial banquet at the Canad Inns Club Regent. The event annually honours prominent Ukrainian-Canadians for their outstanding community service, charitable contributions and for enhancing and supporting the promotion of Ukrainian language, culture and history.

John Gillis

received the Veterans Ombudsman's Commendation for outstanding leadership on behalf of veterans. His work with Deer Lodge Centre, echoing a deep concern for the most vulnerable veterans, and his leadership within the veterans community have made him an exemplary ambassador for all veterans. Guy Parent, veterans ombudsman, presented the award in Halifax.
