New Calgary skyscraper to 'top off' at 58 storeys
CALGARY -- A 14-metre-long vertical steel girder was to be added to a Calgary skyscraper under construction Thursday afternoon, a step that will make the Bow tower the tallest building in Canada outside Toronto.
The girder will be the first link in the steel skeleton that makes up the 55th through 57th floors.
The Bow is to be 218 metres -- that's 728 feet -- by the end of Thursday. Near the end of September, it is scheduled to "top off" at 58 storeys and the exterior glass curtain wall is to be in place by Christmas.
"Anywhere in Calgary you're going to see that piece of steel standing up there," said Michael Brown, associate vice-president with developer Matthews Southwest.
The Bow will be the home of energy companies Encana and Cenovus Energy when completed in early 2012. It will have nearly two million square feet.
The Bow, situated downtown along Centre Street between 6th and 7th Avenues S.E., is owned by H&R REIT and is being constructed by Ledcor Construction Ltd. The design architect is Foster + Partners of London.
Brown added there has been "unbelievable" interest in the retail space on the lower levels of the Bow tower but the first tenant likely won't be signed until near the end of the year.
The Bow will eclipse what used to be Calgary's tallest building, the nearby Suncor Energy Centre at 52 storeys.
