Pitch wins Solberry head top prize

A company that is processing the little known, locally grown seabuckthorn into functional food products won first prize in Innovate Manitoba's first Pitch Day event.

Solberry Inc.'s president Mila Maximets took home the $7,500 first prize in the two-minute pitch competition that brought out 27 business startups and concepts on Wednesday evening.

Solberry is already selling its seabuckthorn puree and herbal tea products in more than 30 stores and had interested customers in Japan and Hong Kong.

DekTreats, a new company headed by nutritional science graduate Ocean Nenadov won the second prize of $2,500. It is developing single serving frozen probiotic yogurt and high fibre biscuit dessert products.

The competition was open to individuals and pre-revenue companies incorporated for less than one year.

Innovate Manitoba is a new organization supported by the province and private sector that is looking to amalgamate innovation related information and services in Manitoba.

Epicenter AV, a company that is developing a universal remote control application for use in bars and clubs with multiple televisions won the $1,000 people's choice award.

VastCon, new biomedical company developing a colorectal cancer diagnostic technology won $1,000 for the best researcher pitch and an initiative called No-Bull Energy headed by University of Manitoba student Jason Greschuk won the $1,000 for best student pitch.

His company is developing a process to harvest Lake Winnipeg cattail biomass for use as alternative energy forms.
