President of Invest NB says it is considering paying bonuses to staff

FREDERICTON - The president of Invest NB says the Crown agency is considering the idea of paying bonuses to its staff but doesn't believe the idea would get government support during a time of budget restraint.

Robert MacLeod says the 30 employees are essentially a sales team and bonuses are a common way to motivate sales.

MacLeod says the job of trying to attract companies from around the world to locate or invest in New Brunswick is fiercely competitive.

Roger Melanson, the Liberal economic development critic, says he likes the idea of offering bonuses and Invest NB should look for ways to be more aggressive.

Appearing before a committee of the legislature today, MacLeod says the agency helped create 689 jobs between July 2011 and the end of March last year — its first year of operation.

He says the new jobs pay an annual average salary of $34,000, shy of the $37,500 target that Invest NB had set.

Invest NB is mandated to create jobs and boost business investment in New Brunswick.
