Quebec backs paper-mill workers
MONTREAL -- The Quebec government said Friday it's ready to support the union representing workers at a closed paper mill in Quebec City, but insists taxpayers won't be put on the hook to keep facility open.
Natural Resources Minister Clément Gignac said any request for financial help to reopen the White Birch newsprint mill will be looked at, but expects private-sector investors to make any major investments.
U.S.-based White Birch Paper Co. announced late Thursday the idled Stadacona plant was being closed permanently after its 600 unionized workers rejected a final company offer that would have slashed wages and pension benefits.
