Ragpickers owner seeks deal

THE owner of a vintage clothing store said she's trying to negotiate a settlement with her landlord to retrieve her extensive holdings.
Kristen Andrews, owner of the iconic Exchange District shop Ragpickers Antifashion Emporium Costumes & Books, said she's working with landlord Eduardo Famakin's lawyer to finalize an outstanding debt, and then plans to open in another location.
"People have been coming forward offering space," Andrews, who's picked a new location, said. "We've been offered a space."
Famakin could not be reached for comment.
Andrews said she went to her McDermot Avenue shop about three weeks ago only to find the locks had been changed. Famakin had refused to allow her to remove her stock and paperwork.
Media reports stated Famakin had surprised Andrews with a demand for an unpaid bill.
Ragpickers has been in business for more than 25 years, 12 of them at the location on McDermot.
Andrews said Famakin bought the building a year ago.
Andrews said Famakin had been making demands for outstanding payment on her share of taxes and utilities on the building, but he had not presented her with a final bill or ever threatened to evict her.
"Each time it was mentioned, I was presented with different numbers," said Andrews, who only wants to see "some actuals," to support Famakin's figures, pay off her debt and remove her stock.
Andrews said she probably has more than $200,000 worth of stock in the building, along with client information and other paperwork.
