Retail giants likely to join Marshalls

AMERICAN home-accessories giant Bed, Bath & Beyond and Canadian casual-and-outdoor clothing specialist Mark's Work Wearhouse are believed to be the two mystery tenants that will be joining Marshalls in the new Polo North retail/office complex.

U.S. discount retailer Marshalls was confirmed earlier this week as one of three major retail tenants that will be leasing space on the main floor of the three-storey complex now under construction on the former Winnipeg Arena property next to Polo Park mall.

Michael Stronger, a commercial leasing specialist with Shindico Realty Inc., said at the time that Colliers is also in "deep negotiations" with two other prospective tenants, but refused to say who they are until leasing deals are signed. He said one would be a newcomer to the Winnipeg market and the other already has a presence here.

Industry sources say the latter is Mark's Work Wearhouse, which has six stores in the city. And the other is believed to be Bed, Bath & Beyond, which has been eyeing the Winnipeg market for more than four years and made an unsuccessful bid in February 2011 to open a 28,000-square-foot store in Kenaston Commons.

The sources said Mark's will be relocating its store at 616 St. James St. to the Polo North site, although a company spokesman could not be reached Friday for comment.

A spokesperson for Bed, Bath & Beyond's Canadian operations also was unavailable Friday for comment.

Bed, Bath & Beyond has been a popular retail destination for Manitobans making shopping excursions to Grand Forks, Fargo and Minneapolis, where it has outlets.

According to its website, it has 33 stores in seven Canadian provinces. The three provinces where it doesn't have a retail presence are Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

Founded in 1971, the retailer carries a wide selection of products for the bathroom, bedroom, kitchen and dining room.

Mark's Work Wearhouse carries a broad selection of casual and outdoor clothing, footwear and accessories for men, women and children.

Other international retail chains said to be looking at the Winnipeg market include Loft, Kohl's, J. Crew, Nordstrom, H&M, and Dick's Sporting Goods.
