Toshiba buys local office-furniture store

Electronic giant Toshiba Corp. has bought out family-owned business Patzer Office Equipment Ltd. of Winnipeg and is keeping the store open under the old family name.

"Everything's the same for now. It's just the company is owned by Toshiba," former owner Kevin Patzer said.

Patzer said he and the nine workers are keeping their jobs and customers won't notice any changes at the store, located at 1475 Dublin Ave.

The store sells fax machines, copiers, printers and other business machines.

The closing date for the sale was March 30, and the sale price was not disclosed.

Patzer's father founded the company in 1975, but he's retired from the business and in poor health, his son said.

Patzer said selling the business was a hard decision. "To see a change is not easy. It's been a family tradition. We have a tradition with our customers and our employees. But this (sale) brings a lot of opportunity to the company that a large corporation can bring.

Patzer said he's also staying to manage the business for Toshiba.

Rick Baird, CEO of Toshiba Business Solutions, confirmed the sale Thursday.
