Tourism awards presented
WINNIPEG Jets bigwigs Mark Chipman and David Thompson are among nine individuals and organizations presented with 2012 Winnipeg Tourism Awards of Distinction.
Tourism Winnipeg said the awards, presented at a recent gala at the Fort Garry Hotel, celebrate outstanding efforts by individuals and organizations in making Winnipeg a memorable tourism destination.
Chipman and Thompson were presented with the Leader of the Year award for their roles in True North Sports & Entertainment, which opened the city's leading concert and entertainment venue -- the MTS Centre -- in 2004 and brought NHL hockey back to Winnipeg in 2011.
The other award winners are:
Volunteer of the Year: Gary Day, the costume-clad volunteer host and on-the-spot history teacher aboard the Manitoba Museum's Nonsuch.
Employee of the Year: Rolando Pascua, a senior front desk agent at the Fairmont hotel, for his unbridled enthusiasm in greeting and assisting hotel guests.
Business of the Year: Heartland International Travel and Tours, for owner Don Finkbeiner's role in organizing tours of the city for delegates attending Food Bank Canada's national conference last year in Winnipeg.
Influencer of the Year: Myron Pawlowsky, for his tireless work in organizing and hosting the International Association of Commercial Administrators' 34th annual conference last year in Winnipeg.
Marketing under $2,500: The Exchange District BIZ for its marketing efforts promoting its Reel to Reel walking tour of the Exchange, highlighting the rich history of filmmaking in the neighbourhood.
Marketing over $2,500: The Downtown Winnipeg BIZ for its Downtown Peggy marketing initiative, which used social media such as Facebook and Twitter to promote downtown news and events.
Innovation of the Year: Forks North Portage Development Corp., for its annual winter warming huts art and architecture competition on the river trail at The Forks.
Lifetime Achievement: George Gershman, the 89-year-old former longtime general manager of the Charterhouse Hotel and the Glendale Country Club, for his "six-decade career as the ultimate Winnipeg booster."
