Winnipeg's new homes cost 4.4% more this year Winnipeg's new homes cost 4.4% more this year

WINNIPEG had one of the biggest year-over-year jumps in new-home prices in the country in May, although the increase from the previous month was relatively small.

New Statistics Canada figures Thursday show Winnipeg's new-house price index for May was up 4.4 per cent from a year earlier, but only 0.2 per cent from April.

The agency said local builders attributed the year-over-year increase, second only to Toronto/Oshawa's 5.5 per cent, to several factors, including higher labour and building-material costs, rising land-development costs and additional costs due to building code changes. The month-over-month increase was attributed to higher building material costs.

Nationally, Canada's monthly price gain was 0.3 per cent and the year-over-year increase was 2.4 per cent.
