Young local architectural firm snags international award in Big Apple
A young Winnipeg architecture firm will have to make room on the mantel for another international award.
The principals of 5468796 Architecture were in New York late last week to receive the top prize at this year's 2012 Progressive Architecture Awards, which are presented annually by U.S.-based Architect Magazine.
The five-year-old firm, founded by Johanna Hurme and Sasa Radulovic, received the PAA's First Award for its design of the proposed Bond Tower.
It's the second major architecture award the firm has won for the Bond Tower project, having recently received an Award of Merit from Canadian Architect magazine. It has also received seven other national and international awards in the past for other projects it has worked on, including two previous Progressive Architecture Awards.
5468796 is one of 10 firms to receive 2012 PAA nods.
The Bond Tower is an 11-storey office-condominium tower local developers Mark Penner and Kori Buhler are proposing to build on the former Pazsteaks restaurant site on William Stephenson Way, just west of Shaw Park.
Because it's on such a narrow lot, the tower will be only 10 metres wide. Its bold design is what seemed to grab the jury panel's attention.
"The floor plans are rendered unique by the size, orientation, location and spatial quality of the openings, which incorporate inter-floor stairs," the magazine said. "While the office interiors will remain each tenant's private domain, the apertures become occupied spaces for collaboration and interaction, opening up a wealth of possibilities for planned and informal use, which impressed the jury."
It also noted the tower's exterior rainscreen consists of black steel panels that will be installed in such a way it creates a cavity where lights can be installed. The panels will also be spaced apart to allow light to filter out, creating a glowing grid at night.
"The design is really interesting and innovative -- aggressive even," said juror Cathy Simon.
"This has beautiful proportions, and I like the scalelessness of it," added juror Joseph Rosa.
The developers have not said when they might begin construction, or how much the project is likely to cost.
