Stephen Harper says he's 'pulling' for Jack Layton in his battle with cancer

SASKATOON - Prime Minister Stephen Harper says he'll be "pulling" for NDP Leader Jack Layton in his battle with prostate cancer.

Harper notes that he's faced off against Layton in Parliament for many years but considers him and his wife, fellow MP Olivia Chow, to be friends.

Layton says he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will stay on as leader of the federal NDP while he's being treated.

Layton says he intends to battle the disease and win, just as his father did.

The prime minister, who is in Saskatoon, says he spoke to Layton and wished him all the best.

Harper says he looks forward to doing political battle with Layton for many years to come.
