Chief of defence staff tells soldiers to stand tall and proud despite charges

CFB TRENTON, Ont. - Canada's chief of defence staff told soldiers at CFB Trenton on Wednesday to stand tall and stand proud amid stunning allegations their base commander murdered two women.

Gen. Walter Natynczyk said it's been a tough two days since Col. Russell Williams was charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Jessica Lloyd and Cpl. Marie-France Comeau. "We all feel this shock," Natynczyk said.

"We all have to step up. We have a duty. We have a responsibility to Canadians. I told them to stand tall. I told them to stand proud."

Natynczyk says he felt as if he suffered a "body blow" and was winded when he heard the news.

Lloyd's body was found Monday near Tweed and Comeau was found dead Nov. 25 in her Brighton home.

Williams is also charged in two sexual assaults in Tweed in September and will appear in court via video on Feb. 18.

Lloyd's funeral will be held on Saturday afternoon in Belleville.

Belleville lawyer John Wonnacott, who represented Williams at his court appearance Monday, said he has not been retained to represent Williams.

But he did say Williams is in civilian, not military custody.
