Games, feasts, dominate low-key celebrations for Nunavut's 10th anniversary

IQALUIT, Nunavut - Games, feasts and ceremonies throughout Nunavut will mark the 10th anniversary of the creation of the eastern Arctic territory Wednesday.

Exactly one decade ago, Nunavut was carved off the old Northwest Territories to give area Inuit more control over their cultural and economic development. Progress in the region has been slow, but Inuit leaders say both business and government are beginning to gather steam.

Wednesday's celebrations, low-key compared to those held in 1999, will be held in all of Nunavut's 27 communities.

In the territorial capital of Iqaluit, a special session of the legislature will be held where premier Eva Aariak will lay out the government's plans for the territory's next 10 years.

The day will end with a community dance and feast, featuring Inuit delicacies such as caribou, arctic char, seal and narwhal skin.
