First Nations university may get funding yet

REGINA -- Saskatchewan Advanced Education Minister Rob Norris says there's hope a "new deal" could be struck that would see the First Nations University of Canada continue to operate.

Norris said he met Wednesday with Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations Chief Guy Lonechild and spoke by phone with University of Regina president Vianne Timmons.

He said the new deal would not mean a restoration of $5 million in provincial funding that was pulled last week in light of ongoing governance concerns and allegations of financial impropriety.

But funding could flow through the U of R and allow First Nations University to remain open.
