Man charged in couple's deaths

EDMONTON -- A man long identified by police as a suspect in the mysterious deaths of an Alberta couple in their 70s who were last seen nearly two years ago has been charged with first-degree murder in the case.

Laser brings down police chopper

A Durham Regional Police helicopter was forced to land at a nearby police station after it was repeatedly struck with a high-powered laser Saturday.

Spokeswoman Sgt. Nancy van Rooy said the Toronto-area pilot was taken to hospital to ensure he hadn't suffered any eye damage from the laser.

While he was released, it is possible damage could take several days to emerge, van Rooy said.

Melissa Perry, 20, has been charged with mischief endangering life and assault with a weapon.

Ontario plans surtax on wealthy

TORONTO -- Ontario's minority Liberals will survive Tuesday's crucial budget vote and avoid another election after striking a deal with the New Democrats to hike taxes for the wealthy.

Placing a two percentage point surtax on incomes over $500,000 was a key concession to lock in NDP support, although the Liberals did not meet all the NDP's demands.

Neighbourhood watch shooter out

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The neighbourhood watch volunteer who killed an unarmed black teenager has posted $150,000 bail and has gone into hiding, although law-enforcement officials can track him at all times.

George Zimmerman is awaiting his second-degree murder trial for the killing of Trayvon Martin.

Arguments start in Edwards trial

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A key prosecution witness in the criminal trial of former presidential candidate John Edwards contacted other witnesses in the case to ask about their planned testimony, a possible violation of federal law, a judge said Monday.

U.S. District Court Judge Catherine C. Eagles ruled lawyers for Edwards could mention the improper contact by former Edwards aide Andrew Young to jurors in opening statements Monday.

Young once falsely claimed paternity of the child Edwards fathered with his then-mistress Rielle Hunter in 2007. The former aide is potentially the government's most important witness as prosecutors seek to prove the then-married Democratic candidate masterminded a scheme to use nearly $1 million provided by two wealthy campaign donors to help hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.
