Novartis decision soon

TORONTO -- Health Canada expects to make a decision "shortly" on what to do with a significant portion of the country's flu vaccine supply that has been in limbo since the end of last week.

A senior official said Tuesday the department has finally been able to get information from the Italian regulatory body that initially suspended distribution of two types of flu vaccine made by pharmaceutical giant Novartis, a move that prompted a number of European countries and then Canada to place a hold on use of those vaccines.

Dr. Paul Gully, Health Canada's senior medical adviser, said the department has been gathering information from the European regulatory agencies, Novartis and now the Italian body.

Newcomer attitude shifts

OTTAWA -- Canadian hearts are hardening slightly toward the country's immigrants, particularly when it comes to their impact on the economy, an internal government survey suggests.

The latest results of the Citizenship and Immigration tracking survey -- conducted every year since 1996 to gauge public opinion on immigration -- suggest national attitudes toward both the number and the value of Canadian immigrants are shifting.

The 2012 survey, obtained under access to information laws, found the number of Canadian respondents who said they felt immigration was having a positive effect on the economy was 56 per cent -- a decline of 10 percentage points from the 2010 survey.

The number of respondents who said they believe immigration has a positive impact on Canadian culture came in at 40 per cent, a decline of between 16 to 18 per cent from 2010 levels.

New Star Wars movies

LOS ANGELES -- A decade after George Lucas said Star Wars was finished on the big screen, a new trilogy is destined for theatres as The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday it is buying Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion.

The seventh movie, with a working title of Episode 7, is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The new trilogy will carry the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond Return of the Jedi, the third film released and the sixth in the saga.

After that, Disney plans a new Star Wars movie every two or three years. Lucas will serve as creative consultant in the new movies.

Iran sanctions sought

THE U.S. and the European Union said Tuesday they'll press on with sanctions against Iran, even as they hope the promise of new negotiations could lead to a diplomatic solution ending the nuclear standoff.

Appearing together at a news conference in the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo before continuing a joint tour of the Balkans in Serbia and Kosovo, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said both diplomacy and pressure would continue until Iran makes significant concessions over its disputed uranium enrichment activity.
