Jack Layton political timeline

1981: First elected to Toronto City Council.

1984: Elected to board of Metropolitan Toronto.

1988: Marries Olivia Chow.

1990: Serves as deputy mayor of City of Toronto.

1991: As an official NDP candidate, runs for Toronto mayoralty. Loses to June Rowland.

1993: Runs in Toronto riding of Rosedale and loses.

1997: Runs in the Toronto riding of Broadview-Greenwood and loses.

2001: Elected president of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities.

2003: Becomes leader of the NDP in January.

Jan. 27: Officially resigns from Toronto city council, ending a 20-year run in municipal politics.

2004: Wins a seat in the House of Commons in the riding of Toronto-Danforth. The NDP win 19 seats in the June election.

2006: Leads the NDP to 29 seats in the January election.

2008: Leads NDP to 37 seats in October election.

2010: Announces he has prostate cancer.

2011: Has hip surgery in the spring, just weeks before the government is defeated and a federal election called.

April 30: The Toronto Sun runs a story that suggests Layton was caught by police naked in a massage parlour in 1996, but was never charged.

May 2: Leads NDP to official Opposition status with 103 seats.

June 15: Gets the keys to Stornoway, the residence of the leader of the official Opposition.
