Man arrested during Quebec student protest facing terrorism-related charge
MONTREAL - A man arrested on a terrorism-related charge during a student protest this week in Quebec will remain behind bars for now.
Denis Marc Pelletier was in a Montreal courtroom Thursday for what was supposed to have been a bail hearing, but the case did not proceed as planned.
A new lawyer and evidence disclosure pushed the bail hearing back to at least March 8, and perhaps later.
The Crown has already indicated that it will oppose bail in Pelletier's case due to the nature of the charges against him.
The 29-year-old man is facing at least seven charges, including possession of explosives, possession of an arson device and uttering threats.
A charge of inciting terrorism stems from alleged postings on a social media site that police observed last weekend.
According to poorly written messages littered with mistakes, left on his Facebook page, there was a reference to "terrorism 2.0."
There were references to the suspect in the Quebec election-night shooting, the 2006 shooting at Dawson College, and to the gunman in the national assembly shooting in 1984.
He is also charged with threatening to use explosives in what was described as a "show of 50,000 people," referred to in one post.
The page, which was public a day earlier, has been taken down.
Pelletier was arrested during unrest following an education summit Tuesday. Police said he was carrying two Molotov cocktails.
One of Pelletier's lawyers said he is not surprised the Crown opposes bail.
Serge Lamontagne said earlier Thursday that he hoped to get some of the evidence against his client and to further discuss the case with him.
"I don't know if he has that comprehension (of the charges) — when we use the word 'terrorism' it comes with certain inferences and references," said Lamontagne.
