LINDSAY, Ont. -- A police officer from the central Ontario community of Peterborough is expected to recover after he was shot Wednesday morning while executing a drug warrant in an incident in which another man was shot and killed.

Const. Keith Calderwood is in stable condition at Toronto's St. Michael's Hospital after being airlifted from Lindsay, Ont., where the shooting occurred.

Calderwood, 37, is a seven-year veteran of the Peterborough police force and a father of three.

Peterborough police chief Murray Rodd said he and Calderwood's wife were able to speak to the officer before he was airlifted to Toronto.

"This was a bad day for our service," Rodd said. "We're very thankful our member is in stable condition."

The shooting happened at around 11:20 a.m. as police were conducting a criminal investigation at an apartment.

Five people are in custody.
