Cancer inquiry questioned
ST. JOHN'S, N.L. -- A judicial inquiry into hundreds of botched breast-cancer tests in Newfoundland appears to be more of a "prosecution" than an inquiry, Premier Danny Williams said Thursday.Williams offered the candid comments after emerging from a meeting with oncologists and pathologists to discuss ways of improving their compensation and easing their workloads.
Canada supports Israel
TORONTO -- Prime Minister Stephen Harper says Canada has stood by Israel even when it wasn't popular to do so and will continue to support Jewish people in the future.
Harper was speaking in Toronto on Thursday night at a celebration of Israel's 60th anniversary and pledged to stand with the nation as a friend and ally.
Tim's worker reinstated
AN Ontario woman has been rehired a day after she was fired from Tim Hortons for giving a free Timbit to a fussy baby.
"Unfortunately the action of the manager of this location was not appropriate, nor grounds for dismissal," a statement from Tim Hortons said Thursday.
Child with cancer seized
HAMILTON -- Child welfare authorities on Thursday seized an 11-year-old cancer-stricken boy from his parents to compel the child to take chemotherapy.
He has an aggressive form of leukemia and has already had some chemotherapy. But his parents say the treatment was ineffective and caused the lad great suffering. So, as a family, they decided to cease further treatments.
Sexist comment costs job
REGINA -- Muttering a sexist comment about a member of the Opposition has cost a Saskatchewan government backbencher his post as legislative secretary to the premier.
Mike Chisholm of the Saskatchewan Party quit that position Thursday after referring to NDP member Deb Higgins as "dumb bitch" during debate in committee.
