The Scene RWB welcomes Cuban dancer back to its ranks

A former principal dancer is rejoining the Royal Winnipeg Ballet for its 70th anniversary season, artistic director André Lewis has announced.

Cuban dancer Reyneris Reyes, a member of RWB from 1999 to 2004, is coming back after a stint with Boston Ballet that ended in 2007.

Reyes was seen here last season as a guest artist in Romeo & Juliet, opposite Maureya Lebowitz.

It was also announced that two dancers have been promoted. Amar Dhaliwal, from Alberta, has been promoted to second soloist. Liam Caines, from New Brunswick, rises from apprentice to the corps de ballet.

Caines is currently the host of a video blog series about the making of RWB's Moulin Rouge -- The Ballet that can be viewed at www.rwb.org.

RWB School graduate Sarah Davey joins the company as an apprentice.

The season opens Oct. 21-25 with the premiere of Moulin Rouge -- The Ballet. Single tickets are on sale now through the RWB box office (956-2792) or Ticketmaster.

The company is urging Winnipeggers to join the dancers in a huge can-can kick line to launch the anniversary season on Sept. 2.

The event takes place in the courtyard of the new Manitoba Hydro building on the corner of Edmonton Street and Graham Avenue from noon to 1 p.m. The Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra will provide the music.

Following the dancing, anniversary cupcakes will be served. Participants are asked to bring a food bank donation.
