Writers' guild hires staff

WINNIPEG - The Manitoba Writers’ Guild has hired a paid staff member who will begin work Tuesday.

Polly Washburn, a veteran of several posts in Winnipeg’s film and arts community, has been given the title of membership, communication and events co-ordinator.

"Polly’s enthusiasm, experience, communication skills and familiarity with Manitoba writers and writing will be a great benefit as we move from a recovery phase to a rebuilding phase," MWG president Dennis Cooley said in a statement released Thursday night.

The guild, which serves Manitoba’s professional writers, has been without staff for more than a year. It had been embroiled in a dispute over finances with its previous executive director.

Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Folk Festival has announced that it is looking for a new marketing and communications manager to replace the outgoing Tutu Ilelaboye.

The folk festival has just given Britain’s Billy Bragg, who performs at the Burton Cummings Theatre Saturday night, its annual Artistic Achievement Award.

The organization was also instrumental in landing the Canadian Folk Music Awards for Winnipeg in November 2010.
