Festival expects to lure 6,000 film buffs to Gimli

WITH the demise of Winnipeg's FilmExchange festival a few years back, the Gimli Film Festival has stepped up to take its place as both a venue for movie fans and an event to attract film industry players from Manitoba and all over the world.

So says the festival's executive director Kristine Sigurdson, adding that the ninth edition of the film fest boasts three indoor venues (in addition to its free screenings on the beach at dusk) and "lots of parties, receptions and seminars."

Last year, the Gimli fest scored something of a coup with an appearance by Paul Gross discussing his First World War film, Passchendaele. Gross was scheduled to appear this year, but had to cancel. (His actress wife Martha Burns will attend a Sunday seminar on the relationship between the actor and director.)

But Sigurdson says the event continues to grow, with an anticipated attendance figure of around 6,000 people coming to the beach-resort town this year.

The 2009 edition's highlights include:

The Opening Night Party. Tonight from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Lakeview Resort may be the best opportunity to mingle with the fest's guest artists. Tickets are $15.

Free beach screenings (arrive at dusk, bring a low-slung beach chair and a blanket) are around 10 p.m. and include Mike Leigh's Happy-Go-Lucky (Friday), One Week (Saturday), Pontypool (Saturday at midnight), Vicky Cristina Barcelona (Sunday), Who Has Seen the Wind (Monday), and the documentary Waterlife (Tuesday).

The most controversial panel is bound to be Copyright: Remixing Issues (today at 5 p.m. at the Waterfront Centre). It will examine the issues raised by the doc RIP! A Remix Manifesto, which questions the legitimacy of "intellectual property" with that film's co-director Mark Ellam.
