Winnipeg Free Press - PRINT EDITION
Jazz
Doozy (OpenArt Productions)
There is a lot of good music on this double-CD set, vocally by Jackie Ryan and instrumentally by a group of top jazz players on a mixed repertoire that runs from Benny Carter to Antonio Carlos Jobim to Oscar Brown Jr. to Billie Holiday.
Ryan knows her way around a classic song, such as Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most, where her operatic phrasing over Cyrus Chestnut's piano accompaniment makes for a fresh take.
The singer is backed by tasteful players like Chestnut, Eric Alexander (tenor saxophone), Jeremy Pelt (trumpet), Ray Drummond (bass) and Carl Allen (drums, who add depth to the comping and solo work. Pelt slurs beautifully on the Billie Holiday tune Tell Me More and More and Then Some and guitarist Romero Lubambo is outstanding on the Brazilian numbers.
Ryan has a beautiful voice and phrasing that make familiar tunes sound interesting. 'Ö'Ö'Ö'Ö
