Jazz
Remembrance (Concord Jazz)
IT'S hard to decide when this trio sounds best: by itself; when it is augmented by a percussionist or cellist; or all the time.
Acoustic and electric bassist John Patitucci composed 11 pieces as a tribute to jazz greats such as Monk and Coltrane on Monk/Trane, Sonny Rollins on Sonny Side, Joe Henderson on Joe Hen, Freddie Hubbard on Blues for Freddie and Michael Brecker on the title track.
Saxophonist Joe Lovano, a major talent himself, easily captures the spirit of the jazz elders. Drummer Brian Blade, Patitucci's colleague in Wayne Shorter's band, is terrific throughout. Patitucci is a delight to listen to as he easily strides from swing to funk to bop.
Percussionist Rogerio Boccato plays on four tracks and cellist Sachi Patitucci, John's wife, joins the trio to make Scenes from an Opera a soulful experience.
This is great contemporary jazz playing with a foot in the music's history. 'Ö'Ö'Ö'Ö
