New music: Jazz

Cyrus Chestnut

Spirit (Jazz Legacy Productions)

Straight-ahead jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut draws on his deep spiritual roots for this solo performance that combines gospel and pop influences from Duke Ellinton's Come Sunday to Paul Simon's Bridge Over Troubled Water to The Lord's Prayer.

The performance ranges from bouncy to laid-back as Chestnut, a fine player who is no stranger to Winnipeg audiences, balances the church and the secular in 14 excellent tracks, including a sensitive rendition of Horace Silver's Peace. 'Ö'Ö'Ö 1/2
