Trinnipeg !78 (Clothes Horse Records)
It's been six years since the debut album by Elliott Walsh, a.k.a. Nestor Wynrush, Guy, I'm From Here, turned heads with its unique take on prairie hip-hop. He's been busy grinding out a paycheque, hosting his popular radio program on 101.5 UMFM and collaborating with veteran acts Grand Analog, Gumshoe Strut and Pip Skid over the past few years, but Trinnipeg !78 is definitely worth the wait. Pulling together low-key, melancholic beats from mcenroe, soso, Odario Williams and newcomers Kutdown, Lonnie Ce. and Murdock, Wynrush's blues rap and vulnerable vocals tap into stories of hardship, hope, family, friendship, culture and broken fragments of love. The MC grew up in Ontario and Manitoba, and his heart-on-his-sleeve lyrics are rooted in the struggles many first-generation Canadians have, searching for their identity in a multicultural society that doesn't always deliver on the promise that Canada is the best country in the world to live in.
Not only one of the most thought-provoking local releases of the year, Trinnipeg !78 is one of the best albums you'll hear in 2009.
Catch Wynrush and Grand Analog live on May 27 at The Pyramid for their double release party. 'Ö'Ö'Ö'Ö
