Dominic West returns as Baltimore police Detective Jimmy McNulty in "The Wire," the dark, critically acclaimed drama returning Sunday for a second season on HBO.
Guy Fieri's Road Show
YOU probably know the Food Network's rock 'n' roll chef Guy Fieri from his popular shows Diners, Drive-ins and Dives and Guy's Big Bites. Since winning the second season of The Next Food Network Star, Fieri has been putting his unique spin on fast, fun cuisine and travelling across the U.S.A., eating at popular greasy spoons.
Fieri is the only champ who has been really able to turn his win on the show -- "American Idol for foodies" -- into a real success. Sure, other winners have shows, but the down-to-earth host is one of the standout stars on the network.
Hoping to take food demonstrations to the next level, Fieri is hitting the road with a loud, concert-style cooking tour, complete with hand-picked music from the chef and a backup DJ.
"Why can't we have a concert with food? Your typical cooking demonstration, there's just no enthusiasm," says Fieri. "There's no energy behind it. I said, 'What if we take a cooking demonstration and fortify it with a lot of good music?... Drive it to the next level?'"
Although book signings or cooking demos are nothing new for celebrity chefs, this is the first time that any chef has put together this type of cooking tour.
"It is wacky, it's definitely outside the box, it's a component that we haven't seen before, so we will see what happens," he recently told the L.A. Times. Although Britain's Jamie Oliver has had his buddies as a backup band for a TV special and some food demos, Fieri is definitely cranking it up a notch with a 1.8-metre-tall, 100-litre margarita maker and other surprises for his audience.
Since he has described the tour "as everything they won't let me do on TV," it will be interesting to see if a toned-down version will appear on the Food Network.
100 Greatest Quotes from the Wire
IT may have not won Emmy, despite being nominated twice, or even drawn huge audiences during its critically acclaimed five-year run on HBO, but David Simon's The Wire, a complex urban drama set on the streets of Baltimore, has been described as one of the greatest television programs ever to air.
"The stories are sprawling, epic, Greek-tragic ruminations on the nature of American conquest and the sacrifices made by the people at the bottom of the ladder on behalf of the ineptitude of those at the top," writes Daniel Carlson for Pajiba.com. "What's more, the dialogue is this thick gun-blast of hardened profanity, street slang, police argot, and the undeniably Shakespearean pleasures of hearing gifted orators hold forth on the tilted battle between good and evil."
While The Wire may be done, the words and wisdom of Omar, McNulty, Bubbles, Rawls, Avon, Stringer and Bunk live on in this 10-minute video compilation of quotes from the show.
