City Oasis
435 Cumberland Ave.
Visited Sunday, 9:45 p.m.
VENUE: Seats 450. Air-conditioned.
FOOD: Try the specialty of the house, stuffed peppers with ground beef and pork ($4), the salty Balkan stew ($3), or burek pie ($4). A wide variety of desserts is available for guests to make their own mix-and-match plates ($3).
DISPLAYS: A small corner display features photographs, with a few woven handicrafts and traditional leather shoes.
SHOW: The local Kolo junior and senior dance groups are highly entertaining. The senior dances feature impressive feats of strength, agility and stamina, and the tiny children who perform in the junior groups are irresistible. Shoes regularly fall off the feet of these determined dancers, who kick the offending footwear to the side and keep on going without missing a beat.
CULTURAL HIGH POINT: The senior dance group stands out for its sheer skill and artistry. Watch as one male dancer lifts two women high in the air at once, spinning them around for several seconds without losing a step. Impressive.
LOST IN TRANSLATION: The display didn't do justice to this country's fascinating culture. Beyond the photographs, there wasn't much to see.
