Greek Pavilion
back
St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church
2255 Grant Ave.

Visited Monday, 6:45 p.m.

VENUE: Seats 350. Air-conditioned.

FOOD: A variety of souvlaki (roasted meat on a stick) is available for $3.50-$5. Or try moussaka (eggplant casserole) for $4, gyros $5, or spanokopita (spinach and feta pie) for $3. Baklava, a pie composed of layers of filo pastry, nuts and honey syrup, is a popular traditional dessert ($2.50).

DISPLAYS: This year's display is all about olive oil and its health benefits. Learn how olive oil is processed, how it's an important component in the Greek church, and how it can be the secret to a healthy life. The display is mainly panels of text with photographs, along with some bottles of olive oil in a case.

SHOW: The local Kefi dancers perform a variety of traditional folk dances, including the always-popular Zorba dance.

CULTURAL HIGH POINT: Judging by the long lineups at the meal counter, the food is a definite high point of this pavilion.

LOST IN TRANSLATION: The small display space limits what can be done, but it would have been nice to see more cultural items along with the panels of text.
